TRUMP: DEAL DONE! Iran: Nope.
The pressure cooker just got a momentary reprieve — or so it seems. It’s the 23rd of March 2026, and the big headline flashing across screens today is Donald Trump claiming progress on talks with Iran to end the war that’s been raging for weeks. In a Truth Social post and follow-up comments, Trump announced that the US and Iran have had “very good and productive conversations” over the past couple of days aimed at a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East. He’s ordered a five-day pause on any planned strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, hinging on how these discussions go. He even suggested the next few days could be decisive, with a possible deal within five days if things keep moving.
This comes right after Trump issued a tough 48-hour ultimatum: reopen the Strait of Hormuz fully or face obliteration of power plants. Oil markets tanked on the threat, with prices spiking amid fears of prolonged disruption to global shipping. Iran hit back hard, vowing major retaliation if the US targets energy sites — threatening Gulf infrastructure, desalination plants, and beyond. Tehran has denied any direct or indirect talks are happening, with state media and officials calling Trump’s claims “fake news”. No confirmation from Iranian channels of any “productive” dialogue; instead, they’ve doubled down on warnings of escalation if pushed.
Trump’s pivot to talks follows a pattern: earlier this month he talked tough about unconditional surrender, declared Iran “totally defeated,” and brushed off ceasefire pushes. Now, with the conflict in its fourth week, economic pain mounting (soaring energy costs are hitting UK households), and allies like the UK urging de-escalation, he’s dialing back the immediate bombing threat.
Despite Donald Trump posting a hilarious UK Saturday Night Live sketch portraying Keir Starmer as fearful of him, Downing Street said Starmer did in fact speak with Trump last night, describing the call as “constructive.” They agreed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is vital for stabilizing energy markets. Starmer is chairing a COBRA meeting today to assess the fallout, while continuing to push for diplomatic off-ramps alongside Britain’s defensive support role.
Let’s hope it’s true, as you say. A genuine breakthrough would be massive: easing the Strait chokehold, cooling oil prices, and pulling back from what could become a wider regional disaster. But skepticism is warranted. Iran rejects the narrative of ongoing talks, the five-day window is short and conditional, and past Trump statements have shifted from “no deal but surrender” to “maybe dialogue” without firm commitments. Israel, a key partner, hasn’t signalled full buy-in yet, and military ops could restart if talks stall.
For Britain, this matters hugely. Our bases, jets, and submarines are tied up in “defensive” ops; energy bills are already punishing; growth forecasts look grim. If Trump pulls off a deal that ends the fighting and secures shipping lanes, it could stabilise things fast. If it’s bluster or breaks down, we’re back to square one with higher risks.
Common sense says watch closely but don’t pop the champagne yet. Trump thrives on the art of the deal, but this one’s high-stakes with a regime that’s not folding easily. Fingers crossed it holds — because the alternative is more chaos that we can’t take or afford.

Excellent timely post…..I await with bated breath!!!
Hope he hasn’t jinxed the deal then! He said that about Russia vs Ukraine! And here we are!
